AS YOUTH unemployment bedeviled the country with no end in sight, an expert on national issues has described Youth empowerment as very critical to the growth and development of a country as well as key to national security. This was contained in a paper delivered by Alhaji Kola Adeyemi of News Agency of Nigeria, titled: Youth Empowerment, “Key to National Security” which was delivered at 2016 Kogi Leadership News Magazine award ceremony held in Lokoja at the weekend. Adeyemi who explained that the youths form the bulk of the country’s population, stressed that this has made it imperative for government at all levels to pay special attention to this category of our population. “Youths are very critical to the development of any country as they constitute a greater percentage of the working population, thereby determining what the future will look like for a particular country”. “No wonder, conscious and deliberate attempts are being made by countries all over the World to produce quality and productive youths, through qualitative education and other means that will ultimately make them become useful to the society,”he said. The veteran journalist pointed out that the issue of unemployment of millions of graduates has become a major concern to government and all Nigerians. “The situation has become a keg of gunpowder waiting to explode. It has also aggravated the problem of insecurity. Right now, there is global economic recession that has complicated the economic problem in Nigeria,” he expressed. Adeyemi also disclosed that Nigeria’s experience is not palatable because many of Nigerian graduates are not also employable, adding that, “they are not employable not because they don’t have certificates, but because they cannot make use of their brains and hands”.
