Between election violence and the spoils of office

Governor Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar of Zamfara state has expressed satisfaction with voter turnout as he commends the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for effective arrangement in the timely arrival of election materials to various polling units.

Yari said INEC preparation for the governorship elections was much more effective and more impressive than what was the case with the presidential elections.

He said he was happy that the much celebrated insinuations that the threats of insecurity may disrupt the exercise proved wrong as elections were carried out peacefully across the state.

Governor Yari who cast his vote at his Rumfar Mallam Isa of Galadima ward Talata Mafara local government at about 1.00pm, appeared in high spirit with happy facial expression, suggesting that he was fully satisfied with the overall electoral exercise.

Earlier in the morning however, our correspondent who went round about four local governments, observes that there was evident of poor voter turnout as most of the polling booths were empty.

The conduct of the elections was generally peaceful except that there was report of alleged assualts by bandits who attacked and shot the tyres of a truck conveying INEC adhoc staff, party agents and some security personals on their way to Bindin and Bini villages of Maru local government.

The occupants of the vehicle were said to have been scared and escaped into the nearby bush for safety, but luckily there was no reported loss of live or injury.
