Zamfara State government has assured cattle rustlers and unidentified gunmen that they will not be prosecuted if they willingly surrender their arms to security agencies in the state.
Governor Abdullaziz Yari, who gave the assurance, promised to deploy state agencies to protect them if they cooperate with the state government by heeding the appeal to hand over all arms in their possession.
The Governor warned that failure to hand over arms and ammunitions to the state security agencies, the state government would be forced to take stern action similar to what the Kaduna State government did against all suspected cattle rustlers.
He cautioned the perpetrators of the attacks on innocent persons in the state to stop forthwith or face the rules of law, stressing that anyone found to have any link or sponsoring such culprits would also be dealt with, irrespective of political or soicio-economic cum religious status.
Speaking through his Deputy Malam, Ibrahim Wakkala Muhammad, when the Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of logistic and supply, Mamman Ibrahim Tsafe, paid him a courtesy call, Yari expressed government’s worry over the rising incidences of cattle rustling in the state.
Malam Wakkala said, all the seven states in the North-West zone have jointly agreed to work with all the security agencies to address security challenges that have bedevilled the zone.
Zamfara State is one of the states that is troubled by cattle rustlers, a development that has led to the death of hundreds of persons, theft of thousands of cattle as well as the emergence of illegitimate volunteer group,(Yansakai) and hoodlums known as (Yan (sarasuka) from 2011 to date.
The DIG, who said the police were disturbed by he growing incidences of cattle rustling allegedly by Fulani herdsmen, regretted that the criminal activities of unknown gunmen has led to reprisal attacks against innocent and hapless peasant Fulani persons.
He said the Federal Government would not fold its hands and watch such criminals launch callous attacks, and loot properties of innocent citizens, but was determined to curb the menace by taking urgent steps to that effect.
Ibrahim Tsafe commended the Zamfara State government for the support given to the police, and appealed to the traditional rulers in the state to cooperate with the police to comb out criminal elements from the society.
DIG Tsafe urged officers and men in the zone to step up efforts to contain insecurity challenges facing the zone.
